Jump and Thrive is a Year 7 regulation support programme designed to address key challenges in school attendance and exclusion rates within Somerset.
In a bid to ease the often challenging transition from primary to secondary school, a new programme ‘Jump and Thrive’ has been launched with a proactive, trauma-informed approach. This initiative is specifically designed to support Year 7 students, particularly those grappling with emotional regulation. By focusing on improving student engagement, reducing exclusions, and fostering inclusive school environments, the programme aligns seamlessly with Somerset’s broader education strategy. Through targeted support, it aims to create a nurturing and supportive atmosphere where every student can thrive.
Key Aims
- Improve Attendance: By addressing emotional and behavioural regulation needs, we aim to boost school attendance and engagement for vulnerable students.
- Reduce Suspensions and Exclusions: Using early intervention, physical activity, and mentor support, we will work to reduce the rates of exclusion, which are higher than the national average in Somerset.
- Enhance Classroom Environments: The programme will work with schools to create positive, inclusive learning environments for all students.
The Role of Physical Activity
Physical activity plays a vital role in emotional regulation, supporting:
- Mood Boosting: Reduces anxiety and stress.
- Improved Focus: Movement breaks help improve attention and cognitive function.
- Resilience Building: Activities that challenge but support help students develop coping strategies.
Mentors will integrate physical activities into daily routines, lessons, and after-school sessions, improving students’ capacity to engage and learn effectively.
Expected Outcomes
- For Students: Improved attendance, reduced exclusions, and enhanced academic and social outcomes.
- For Schools: Reduced behavioural incidents, more inclusive classrooms, and staff equipped to manage dysregulated behaviour.
- For Families: Stronger school-home relationships and empowered families able to support their child’s needs.

Jump and Thrive is more than just a program; it’s a transformative approach reshaping how children engage with education and community life. By fostering regulation skills, resilience, and a sense of belonging, the initiative equips children with essential tools that extend well beyond the playground and classroom. Through alignment with key system priorities, Jump and Thrive is making significant strides towards creating a safer, healthier, and more inclusive Somerset for all children and young people.
