The Somerset Health and Wellbeing Survey is an opportunity for pupils and students to share their views and experiences in relation to their own health and wellbeing both in and out of school or college.
What is the Somerset Schools Health and Wellbeing Survey (SSHAW)?
In 2023, Somerset’s Public Health Team conducted the county’s most extensive health and wellbeing survey to date, engaging over 5,000 pupils aged 6 to 18 years old across 87 educational settings. This free, online survey provided vital insights into the challenges and unmet needs facing children and young people in Somerset.
The survey, grounded in validated self-reporting tools, explored a wide range of topics including emotional health and wellbeing, safety, relationships, school experience, lifestyle habits (such as travel to school), and substance misuse. Each participating school received a tailored report, alongside a countywide summary to inform local planning and support.
Traditionally conducted every two years, the next survey was scheduled for the 2024/25 academic year. However, due to internal challenges and reduced capacity within the Public Health team, the decision has been made to pause the survey this year. It will now resume in the 2025/26 academic year.
